Consider
these breast cancer facts:
- The
leading cause of death among women between the ages of 40
and 59 is breast cancer.
- Ninety
percent of breast cancers occur in women with no known risk
factors. All women are at risk and that risk increases with
age.
- According
to the most recent data, mortality rates have begun to decline
in women for the first time. These decreases may be due
to earlier detection and improved treatments. However, the
mortality rate for African American women continues to be
higher.
- In
2001, it is estimated that 192,200 women will be diagnosed
with breast cancer (one every three minutes).
- This
year it is estimated that approximately 1,400 men will develop
breast cancer. If
detected early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate
of 85 percent.
